A national fixture list treats every state the same: one kickoff time, stamped in AEST or AEDT, same for everyone. Your loungeroom doesn't work that way. FootyTonight converted every 2026 AFL and NRL kickoff into each state's own local clock and counted how many matches fall into prime time (8pm or later) versus how many fall before midday, state by state. The gap is not subtle.
NSW, Victoria and Tasmania each get 54 matches this season that kick off at 8pm or later locally — and not one match before midday. Western Australia gets the opposite season: zero matches at 8pm or later, and 42 kicking off before midday local time.

This counts every 2026 AFL and NRL match with a confirmed kickoff time (412 matches; see methodology below for the two we dropped), converted to each state's own timezone and classified by local clock time — not by how the match is billed nationally.
Why the WA number is all AFL
Every one of WA's 42 before-midday matches is AFL. There is no Western Australian NRL club, and while the NRL did play three matches in Perth in 2026 — one at HBF Park and two at Optus Stadium — all three kicked off in the afternoon local time (1:00pm, 1:00pm and 3:30pm), so none of them land in either column. The 42 are a mix: matches involving Western Australian AFL clubs, and matches played elsewhere in the country that simply fall in WA's before-noon window once converted from the national kickoff time.
The earliest of them: Port Adelaide v West Coast in round 3, played at Adelaide Oval, kicks off at 9:30am in WA — the same instant is 12:30pm in NSW and Victoria. It's an early-afternoon match on the east coast; in Perth it's a match you're switching on before your Sunday coffee has gone cold.
It isn't only Adelaide-hosted games. Sydney v Richmond in round 12, played at the SCG, kicks off at 11:15am in WA against 1:15pm in NSW and Victoria — a match played in Sydney itself still lands in WA's before-noon slot once converted.
For contrast, take a match that sits squarely in the other bucket: Rabbitohs v Storm in round 21, kicking off 8:00pm in NSW and Victoria — comfortable prime time on the east coast. The same instant is 6:00pm in WA, which is why it doesn't register in either the WA evening count or the WA before-noon count. It's the closest an NRL match gets to crossing state lines into WA's numbers, and it still lands well short — no match in the dataset flips from evening on the east coast to before-noon in WA, or vice versa; the WA before-noon fixtures are early-afternoon fixtures everywhere else, not evening ones.
SA and NT: small samples, same shape
SA and NT don't carry the imbalance of NSW/VIC/TAS versus WA, but they don't get NSW's steady stream of evening football either — SA has just 1 evening match against 1 before-midday match all season, and NT has 1 evening match against 6 before-midday matches. Those are much smaller counts than the six-state block above, which is itself worth noting: for South Australian and Northern Territory fans, neither prime time nor the before-noon squeeze is really the season's pattern — most matches simply fall in the middle of the day or afternoon, local time.
Data and methodology
This covers every 2026 AFL (207 matches) and NRL (207 matches) fixture in FootyTonight's database, minus 2 NRL round 1 matches played at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas — Knights v Cowboys and Bulldogs v Dragons — which we excluded because "local time" for a US stadium isn't a meaningful comparison point for Australian viewing habits. That leaves 412 matches. All had a confirmed kickoff time; none were missing.
"Evening" means the match's kickoff, converted to that state's local time using standard Australian timezone rules (including daylight saving where it applies), falls at 8:00pm or later. "Before midday" means it falls before 12:00pm local. Matches that fall between those two windows — the large majority of the season — aren't counted in either column; this table isolates the two extremes, not a full distribution.
State-to-timezone mapping: NSW and ACT both use Australia/Sydney, VIC uses Australia/Melbourne, QLD uses Australia/Brisbane, SA uses Australia/Adelaide, WA uses Australia/Perth, TAS uses Australia/Hobart, and NT uses Australia/Darwin. A handful of 2026 NRL fixtures are played at New Zealand venues (Go Media Stadium, One NZ Stadium, Hnry Stadium) as Warriors home games; those remain regular-season NRL fixtures and are counted the same way as any other match, converted to each Australian state's local time — we simply note they aren't played on Australian soil.
We're reporting what the local clock says, not why the fixture was built that way — we don't have visibility into broadcaster or league scheduling decisions, so this is a count, not an explanation.
