How we source data
Where our fixture, ladder and broadcast data comes from, how often it updates, and what we don't publish because we can't confirm it.
Fixtures and scores
AFL fixtures, scores and ladder data come from Squiggle. NRL fixtures and scores come from NRL.com's public draw data, and the NRL ladder from ESPN's standings feed. All of it is normalised into a shared format and stored in our own database rather than fetched live on every page view.
Broadcast information
Where to watch each AFL match comes from the AFL's official broadcasting API, which lists which channels are showing a match and which states those channels reach. We convert that into a state-by-state view of what's available where.
How often data updates
A daily automated job pulls fresh fixtures, scores and broadcast listings and writes them to our database. Pages are served from that database, not fetched from the source on each request.
Why one league's data issue doesn't affect another
Our daily update job runs each league and each data type — AFL fixtures, NRL fixtures, broadcast listings, ladders — as a separate step. If one step fails (for example, a source is temporarily unavailable), the others still complete and update normally. Only the part that failed keeps showing its previous data, instead of one broken source freezing everything.
Full-season AFL broadcast coverage
We backfilled broadcast records for every 2026 AFL home-and-away match — all 207 games have a checked broadcast record in our database, not just recent rounds.
We only list channels we can confirm
The AFL's broadcast guide includes channels beyond free-to-air and pay TV, such as radio stations and international feeds. We only show a channel as a way to watch a match if it's on our list of confirmed AU video services (currently Channel 7, 7mate, 7plus, Fox Footy and Kayo). A channel we don't recognise is skipped rather than guessed at, so a match won't show a viewing option we're not actually sure is a real, watchable option.
If a match has no confirmed broadcast for a state, we say so rather than list something we can't verify.
What we don't know
We don't publish historical NRL broadcast statistics. The NRL.com data we use for fixtures only carries broadcast information for the current round, not past rounds, so we have no reliable way to reconstruct which channel showed an NRL match after the fact. Rather than estimate, we simply don't make that claim.
How we describe finished matches with no broadcast record
For a match that has already been played, we say "not recorded for this match" if we have no broadcast entry for it — not "not confirmed yet," which implies a check is still pending. A game that's already over isn't pending anything, so we don't phrase it that way.
