How NRL kickoff times work across Australian states

FootyTonight Desk · 2026-07-11

NRL kickoff times across Australian states are easy to misread because the draw is usually discussed in Sydney or eastern time, while rugby league fans are spread across the country. A Friday night match can mean one thing in Sydney, another in Brisbane during daylight saving, and another again in Perth.

FootyTonight shows NRL games with local times for each state so you do not have to do the conversion yourself.

The eastern time problem

Many NRL listings use AEST or AEDT as the default. That works for New South Wales and the ACT, and often for Victoria and Tasmania, but Queensland is different during daylight saving because it stays on AEST all year. A 7:50pm Sydney kickoff during daylight saving is not 7:50pm in Brisbane.

Western Australia is further behind the east coast, and South Australia and the Northern Territory use half-hour offsets. Those half-hour states are where casual conversions often go wrong.

How NRL fixtures appear on FootyTonight

The /nrl/fixtures page lists the season draw, and match pages show the viewing details: teams, venue, local start time, free-to-air channel where available, and streaming services. The timezone selector lets you switch between Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Darwin, Hobart and Canberra.

Free TV versus subscription coverage

Timing is only half the question. Nine shows selected free-to-air NRL games each week, plus major events including Origin and the Grand Final. Fox League and Kayo Sports carry every club match live through the season. Our /nrl/how-to-watch guide explains the difference.

When to double-check

Magic Round, State of Origin, finals and late-season broadcast windows can create unusual schedules. FootyTonight is an independent guide and updates from available data sources, but official NRL and broadcaster announcements should be treated as final when a late change matters.
